Samsung S25 Ultra vs iPhone 13 Pro Max: Back Glass Repair — What Makes One Easy and the Other Hard

Two phones came in the same week with the same problem: shattered back glass. One took me 15 minutes. The other took over half an hour and a laser machine. Here is what actually happened, and what you should know before you bring your phone in for a back glass repair.

Job 1: Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra Back Glass

The S25 Ultra came in with a badly cracked back — multiple impact points across the whole panel, starting from the camera area and spreading down. The titanium frame was fine, the screen was working, and the customer just wanted the back sorted.

Before: S25 Ultra back glass with multiple crack points across the panel.

Samsung made the S25 Ultra back glass easier to service than older Ultra models. A heat gun around the edges softens the adhesive enough that the glass lifts cleanly without fighting you. I work around the perimeter slowly — rushing this step is how you crack the frame. Once the adhesive lets go, the old glass comes off in one piece if you are careful, and the new glass goes back with fresh adhesive and light pressure.

After: new back glass on, held with tissue while the adhesive sets. Clean result in 15 minutes.

Total time: 15 minutes. Repair charge: AED 80. The customer picked it up looking like new.

Job 2: iPhone 13 Pro Max Back Glass — A Different Story

The iPhone 13 Pro Max is one of the hardest back glass jobs you will find. Apple fuses the glass directly to the frame with extremely strong adhesive, and the MagSafe ring adds another bonded layer underneath. When this phone came in, the back was completely destroyed — the glass had shattered so badly that pieces were breaking away and the camera area needed foil protection before I could start.

Before laser: camera lenses wrapped in foil for protection. The back glass was completely destroyed.

The only reliable way to remove a fused iPhone back glass is a laser machine. The laser burns through the adhesive layer by layer, loosening the glass without cutting into the frame. I covered the camera lenses with foil first — the laser will damage them if left exposed. Then I ran the laser across the whole back in passes, checking progress between each run.

During laser removal: pieces had to be lifted out one by one after each pass. Much slower than Samsung.

Even with the laser doing most of the work, the pieces had to be lifted and broken out one by one. The glass on this phone does not come off in one sheet like the Samsung — you are picking out fragments, checking for adhesive residue and cleaning the frame between each section. Once the frame was clean, the new back glass went on with fresh adhesive and I used rubber bands around the frame to apply even pressure while it cured.

Rubber bands hold the frame while the adhesive cures — a standard iPhone back glass technique.

Total time: over 30 minutes. Repair charge: AED 120. MagSafe and wireless charging tested after — both working fine.

What you should know before booking a back glass repair

  • Samsung back glass is generally more serviceable than iPhone, especially on recent Ultra models. Heat gun and patience is usually enough.
  • iPhone back glass almost always needs a laser machine. If a shop quotes you a very low price and does not mention a laser, ask how they plan to remove the old glass. Brute force risks damaging the frame or internal components.
  • Do not attempt iPhone back glass at home unless you have the machine and the experience. The foil protection, laser settings and fragment removal each have a risk if you have not done it before.
  • Always test before you pay. MagSafe, wireless charging and all cameras should be checked at the shop before you leave.

FAQ

Can a phone work normally after a laser back glass repair?

Yes, if done correctly. MagSafe, wireless charging and cameras should be unaffected. Always test everything before paying.

Why does iPhone back glass cost more to repair than Samsung?

The process is longer and needs specialist equipment. A Samsung S25 Ultra takes 15 minutes with heat. An iPhone 13 Pro Max takes 30+ minutes with a laser machine and much more careful work.

Is back glass repair worth it, or should I just use a case?

If the phone works fine and only the back is cracked, repair is worth it on a flagship. A case over cracked glass still lets moisture and dust in over time. A proper repair seals the phone again.

How long does the adhesive last after a back glass replacement?

A good quality adhesive done properly should last as long as the original. Avoid submerging the phone for 24 hours after repair to let it fully cure.
