The Middle East in Crisis: Unpacking the US-Israel Strikes on Iran

The Middle East has recently plunged into a severe crisis following a massive, full-scale military offensive by the United States and Israel against Iran, officially dubbed "Operation Epic Fury". This coordinated attack has targeted key Iranian cities and figures, igniting immediate retaliation across several Gulf nations and raising global geopolitical alarms.

The Attack and the Fall of Leadership The military strikes have aggressively targeted major Iranian cities, including Tehran, Isfahan, Qom, and Kermanshah. In a major development confirmed by Iranian State TV, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in a strike on his compound, along with several family members and top military commanders. In response to this, Iran has declared 40 days of national mourning. Tragically, the conflict has already resulted in devastating civilian casualties, most notably the bombing of a girls' primary school in Minab, Iran, which killed at least 100 children.

Regional Chaos and Iran's Retaliation Iran quickly retaliated by launching "Operation True Promise 4", firing over 1,100 missiles and hundreds of drones at Israel, as well as at neighboring Gulf countries like the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, and Kuwait. While the UAE's robust air defense system successfully intercepted the vast majority of these incoming threats, falling debris caused fires, widespread panic, and forced the evacuation and closure of major international hubs like the Dubai airport. Iranian forces also directly targeted US military assets in the region, including the Al Udeid airbase in Doha and the US Navy's Fifth Fleet base in Bahrain.

The Looming Economic and Social Threat for India Experts are calling this escalating war a "nightmare scenario" for India. Socially, the danger is immense: over 1 crore Indians reside and work in the Gulf countries, and around 18,000 Indian students live in Israel. The Indian embassy has already issued advisories urging citizens to exercise extreme caution.

Economically, the impact could be devastating. India imports more than 50% of its crude oil—about 26 lakh barrels every single day—through the Strait of Hormuz. Reports suggest that Iranian forces have already announced the closure of this vital strait. If the oil supply stops, it will lead to skyrocketing petrol and diesel prices, inflated shipping costs, and massive depreciation pressure on the Indian Rupee. Furthermore, political questions are being raised as Prime Minister Modi visited Israel and met with Benjamin Netanyahu just days before the attack, which critics argue compromises India's historically neutral stance in the region.

A Repeat of History? The roots of this specific escalation trace back to December 2025, when Iran's economy collapsed, leading to historic internal protests where an estimated 30,000 citizens were killed by their own government. Despite recent statements from Oman that a US-Iran peace deal was "within reach," this offensive—allegedly lobbied for by Israel and Saudi Arabia for months—was executed anyway.

Many geopolitical experts are warning that this intervention bears a dangerous resemblance to the 2003 Iraq war. Just as the removal of cruel dictators like Saddam Hussein and Muammar Gaddafi led to severe regional instability and the birth of new terrorist organizations, there is a profound fear that destabilizing Iran could make the Middle East significantly worse for its common citizens.
